2017 Land Rover Discovery Arrives...!

It will go anywhere…

It will do anything…

Not quite true, but the folks at Land Rover do make buggies that have serious off-road cred.  On road behavior has been much improved of late also.
With that in mind, say hello to the 5th iteration of Land Rover’s popular Discovery.

As with all recent Land Rover models, the Discovery is a looker.  A bit over 5” longer than the previous model, known as the LR4, the new Disco has less of that top-heavy tip over vibe, and comes off a bit more sporting.  The extra length aids in third row and cargo room, improving livability of the 5th gen.
Two engine choices will be available in the States initially.  A gasoline powered V6 rated at 340 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque will likely be the top seller.  A V6 diesel can also be had, with 254 ponies and 443 lb-ft.  Both motors pair with an 8-speed transmission, aiding in fuel consumption ratings.  Of course it won’t hurt that the new Discovery is almost 1,000 lbs. lighter than the previous LR4.  Road manners should improve significantly!

For you off-roaders, I can report a ground clearance improvement of 1.7”, and a fording depth increase of nearly 8”, up to a total of 35.4” of wading capability.
Tally ho…!

The interior has all the familiar Land Rover design queues, along with the expected updates to available tech and safety.  Available 3-row seating, Meridian sound systems and the InTouch infotainment system with a 10” touch screen can be optioned.  All certain necessities for that run through the marshes to your local mall, no doubt…!
Meaningful improvements, sharp looks, and a starting price of $49,990 should prompt your run down to your nearest Land Rover dealer.  I think you may… discover... something you really like!

Cheers…!

Wine Time with Anomaly Vineyards – Napa’s Mighty Mite

This is a story about a bad commute…

Actually, I am here to talk grapes, but if not for the above mentioned commuting chaos, Anomaly Vineyards would not exist…

The escape route led Steve and Linda Goldfarb away from above mentioned Bay Bridge commute to a house on the west side of St. Helena, getting away from the rat race to enjoy the vineyard views and find some relaxation.  Unbeknownst to the Goldfarbs, a 149-vine grape magnet was growing on the property.
Must…  make…  wine…
Steve and the grapes..!

Over time the irresistible siren call of wine prompted the acquisition of 8 prime CCOF certified acres planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, with some Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot sprinkled in.  Along with the 8 acres of vines, a diminutive but highly efficient 3-story winery was completed in the fall of 2002.  The cellar rooms are below ground, with the winery on the ground floor and offices located above.  Current production resides just over the 1000 case mark, with no plans to grow.
And what, pray tell, are they producing at Anomaly Vineyards…?

How does a finely crafted Cabernet Sauvignon-based blend sound?  Credit goes to both the premium “Cabernet dirt”, as well as talented winemaker Mark Porembski, whose deft touch allows the terrior to speak through the wine.  Manning the helm since the ’05 vintage (Anomaly’s inaugural vintage was 1997), Mark honed his craft assisting at Behrens & Hitchcock on Spring Mountain.  The current 2013 release is 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Petit Verdot and 3% Cabernet Franc, with 1021 cases produced.
But wait...!  If you want to go a cut above, let’s talk Designation

Each vintage, Mark and the Anomaly team set aside the best barrels to create the classic expression of Anomaly Vineyards wine.  The 2013 vintage of Designation filled 9 barrels, thus 225 cases, of ultimate grape juice.  Uncommonly elegant and vibrant, this is a highly allocated wine, but well worth the effort to secure.
T.J. waxing philosophically on all things barrel...

A visit to Anomaly falls in the highly recommended category.  The engaging T.J. Shushereba is an entertaining and informative host, and the wines are finely honed gems.  You will likely be able to compare a couple vintages of the delicious Cabernet, and there may be a Designation sighting as well, if the stars are properly aligned.

Napa’s mighty mite indeed…!
Cheers…

BMW’s New 5-Series Unveiled – The Seventh of Five

The gearheads can breathe a sigh of relief…  The new 5er is out, and contrary to the worry-wort naysayers online, BMW managed not to ruin it.

Quite the contrary…!

The seventh generation of Bayerische Motoren Werke’s midsize sedan, arch-enemy of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and Audi’s A6, has now been released for public viewing.  The G30 (BMW geek-speak) 5-Series has been wrought in finely tailored lines, with an excellent balance of style, sport and presence.
A great deal of effort was put into interior packaging and design as well.  The other Germans have set the bar high, and BMW needed to keep pace.  Solid design maintaining updated BMW themes, and a slightly more driver-centric bias than the previous generation 5, should make this cockpit an excellent place to conduct the business at hand.

Uh… that would be… DRIVING..!

Time for a specification or three…  The entry level car in the U.S. will be the 530i, available in rear or all-wheel drive and powered by a 252 horse, 258 lb-ft 4-cylinder engine.  A step up the food chain nets you the 540i, also rear or all-wheel driven, with 340 ponies and 332 lb-ft of torque.  An M550i powered by an 8-cylinder engine will arrive as well.  TwinScroll turbocharging resides in all engines, as does the usual BMW Valvetronic control, Double-VANOS timing, yada-yada-yada…  We will also see a diesel version, likely the 530d, as well as an upcoming iPerformance hybrid model.  I would also be remiss to not mention the M5 rocket ship!
Safety..?

Yep…  Steering and Lane Control Assistant, Lane Change Assistant, Evasion Aid, Crossing traffic warning, Crossroads warning (reminds me of an old blues tune!), Wrong-way warning…

Still more tech..?
Adaptive LED headlights, lightweight chassis, size-adjustable head-up display, the latest iDrive on a 10.25” screen with the expected gesture control to go along with the knob and touch controller, active steering, remote control parking…

Need I go on here?
I am impressed by what I see with the new 5-er.  All indications are that it will maintain its perch as the sporting alternative in the mid-size luxury class.  Sharp looks, a crisp and cosseting interior, top-shelf tech.  It all adds up to one fine 5…!

Cheers…!

Vacheron Constantin 57260 – World’s Most Complicated Watch

The magic number..?  57

More on that in a bit…

Founded in 1755 by Jean-Marc Vacheron in Geneva, Switzerland, the folks at Vacheron Constantin have been making luxury timepieces for a minute.  The company has grown over the years, and these watches are highly regarded and sought after by collectors the world over.  Current production runs at 20,000 watches per calendar year.
Well, of course this collection of ultimate craftsman had to mark a 260th Anniversary with something a bit ambitious.  Why not make the world’s most complicated watch…?

This byzantine effort, utilizing three watchmakers and eight years of combined work resulted in a 57-complication mind-bender...!
Say hello to the ultimate timepiece, the Reference 57260 pocket watch…

2,800 parts reside in this stunning timepiece.  Each of these parts were hand-decorated by a single Master Watchmaker, using what VC refers to as “traditional techniques…”.  Among the complications you will find a double retrograde split-seconds chronograph, 9 astronomical calendar functions, 7 alarm functions, 8 Westminster carillon striking functions…  The list goes on…
Initial cost estimates range from 10 to 20 million, but the folks at Vacheron Constantin won’t clarify, other than to say it was indeed within that range.

Truly spectacular!
Cheers..!
